Krazy Coupon Lady has some ideas here and here.

Walmart and Target Trips!

Thought I'd post my trips from yesterday. My husband took a day off from work, so what did I do? I went shopping!! It's been a few weeks since I've even used a coupon, much less done a coupon run... So here goes.

Walmart
Vinegar - $2.18
Iams $5.76 - $5 Q
Kraft Dressings $1.58 - $1.50 Q
Quaker Rice Cakes $1.48 - $1 Q
Duncan Hines Cake Mixes $.96 - $.35 Q
Sour Cream $1.94 - $.50 Q
YoPlus $2.08 - $1.50 Q
Kashi dinner $3.28 - Free Q
Wrigley Gum $.96 - Free Q
Tuna $1.27 - $1 Q
Poptart $1.88 - $1 Q
McCormick pepper $1.46 - $1 Q
McCormick food color $1.25 - $1 Q (did you know they make neon food coloring - pink, purple, etc)
Knox $1.28 - $4 Q (overage!)
Kotex $1 - $.75-$1 Q
Johnsons soap $.97 - $1 Q
Vitamin Water $1 - $1 Q
Nightgowns for my girls, 2 shirts, and 2 jackets for me
Total before coupons: $129.50
Total after coupons: $31.71

Target
Huggies Wipes $2.39 - $3 Q
Johnsons lotion $2.19 - $1 Q - $1 TQ
Johnsons soap 1.02 - $1 Q
Planters $1.69 - $1 TQ
Fiber One $1.03 - $.50 Q
Yogos $1.87 - $1 Q
Del Monte Fruit cups $1.69 - $1 Q
Kraft Mac $.82 - $1/2 Q - $1/2 TQ
Pace $2.50 - $4 Q (overage)
Pace $1.92 - $4 Q (overage)
Crisco Spray $2.41 - $1 Q
Crisco Olive Oil $4.99 - $1 Q
Easter Napkins and Plates $.74 (Love to stock up on after holidays!)
Total before coupons: $56.78
Total after coupons: $19.78

A couple tips.

1 - Don't get frustrated if your coupon beeps "item not found" or something like that. Just pull the item out of your bag and show it to the cashier. Usually that is enough. My TQ for Planters beeped and I just pulled them out and showed it too him and pointed out on the coupon that it said "$1 off ANY Planters". That's all it took!

If they still refuse to use the coupon and you know that you are right, you can either have them remove the product from your purchase or have them call for the manager. Most important thing is too be polite about it. You'll get better service when you are nice than if you are snotty.

2 - A coupon will usually beep if the value of the coupon exceeds the price of the product. At Walmart, my Johnson's Buddies Soap was $.97 and my coupon was for $1 off. It beeps, but all he has to do is push a button to accept it. If they question you, plead your case (show product, point out wording on coupon) and go from there. Sometimes they will adjust the value of the coupon down (to $.97, in my case) or they will just accept the coupon value. If they adjust it, they are supposed to write on the coupon that it was adjusted down or they will get the full value of the coupon when they mail it in. But most don't. I like to point that out, more cuz I'm a brat like that... :-) I don't think it's fair that they get $1 worth of coupon if they are only going to give me $.97 worth.

I'd love to post your great shopping trips! Send me an email with your totals and either a picture or a list of what you purchased!

Lessons I've Learned

Just thought I'd share some things that I've learned along my "couponing" journey.

1 - Another deal always comes along. Don't worry if you miss out on a great deal because, chances are, another one is right around the corner. Many of the store sales are on cycles and they will show up again. You'll get the next one!

2 - Couponing takes time and lots of work. There are times that I get so sick of shopping for deals (crazy, I know), that I just stop for awhile. I take a look at the deals each week and if something catches my attention, then that's usually what gets me back in the game. I keep enough of a supply on hand that if I don't shop for a few weeks, we'll be okay.

3 - Buying every deal that comes along can hurt you. When I first started couponing, I would buy up everything that I could get my hands on that was a good deal. Well, in the last couple of months, I've had to throw out a bunch of food that had gone rancid. Was that money well spent (or money saved)?? No, just money down the drain.

4 - It pays to do a little searching before you buy. Buying anything, that is. We are in the market for cable (my husband is so excited) and I've done quite a bit of searching for the best deal. And I have found a ton of information out there that will cut our bill drastically. A couple of hours on the internet will save us a couple hundred dollars for the first year. I consider that money made! If you ever need help finding a deal, let me know and I will do all I can.

5 - Menu planning saves money. I hate deciding what to have for dinner! It is the worst part of the day. Too often, my husband will get home from work and the girls and I are ready and waiting to go somewhere for dinner. So I've started planning our meals each week. On Sundays, I think about what we have and what we need to use and a menu is born. Of course, there are days that I don't stick to it, but it really has helped. We save money by not eating out and by not running to the store for those last minute foods.

6 - Many times you have to act quick to get the great deal. Not a lot of time for mulling it over and thinking about it. If it's a purchase that I was going to make anyway and I find a great deal, then I jump. If it's not a high priced item, then I go for it. If it's something that I really need to think about and consult with my husband about, then I wait. And if the deal is still there, great. But if not, another deal will come along.

7 - Organization is key. Unfortunately, as I type this, my coupon inserts sit in stacks on the kitchen table. I was preparing for my Walgreens trip this week and I spent over an hour looking for 2 specific coupons... If I had taken the time to organize them, this would have taken seconds. There is no right or wrong method to organizing. Do whatever works for you! My goal is to set aside a time each week to cut and organize those coupons. I think it would be so fun to have "coupon cutting" parties. Get a bunch of us together, let the kids play downstairs, and just cut away. It sure would make organizing so much more fun!

8 - I never realized I could get such a rush from saving money!! My heart just goes crazy as I'm checking out and watching my total dip lower and lower. I've been known to do a little dance in the aisle when I find an awesome deal! And it's so nice to know that I'm not the only one... :-)

9 - If you aren't careful, those good deals can cause you to spend more money than you think. How many of you have said, "I HAVE to get it because it's such a good deal!"? One of the greatest things I've learned is that it's okay to walk away from a good deal. I can't even begin to tell you how many times a "great deal" has arrived in the mail or followed me home from the store and I realize that I don't need it, want it, have room to store it, or have any idea what I'm going to do with it... Ask yourself these things before you buy. It sure saves on returns...

Albertsons Deals 4/15/09 -4/21/09

Not a lot going on at Albies this week. Thank goodness, I'm worn out from the past few weeks of deals...

What I like about it is that you can create your own co-op. And you don't ever feel like you get taken advantage of because there is a points system. I can't wait to try it out! Let us know if there are any of you out there that have used this.

No-Nonsense at Walgreens

Just got this from a reader! Gotta have control top! :-) Thanks Kerry!

"Hey, I just got back from Walgreens, and thought I would tell you that the no-nonsense Panty hose is BIGI, then I used 2 $I off Q's, and then each package had another $1 off Q inside. It's not as good as Walmart, but those are the cheapo ones. Mine ended up to be .80/each, and they are the nice control top......FYI!"

No Coupons This Weekend

Don't go rushing out to get your papers on Sunday. It's a holiday weekend and there are no coupons on holiday weekends. Confession - I love "no coupon" weekends. I feel like I get a chance to get caught up on all those piles from previous weeks! :-)

Staples Paper

I went to Staples today and got my "free" paper (read post here). My store had no problem accepting the expired Office Depot coupon, so it won't hurt to ask... But it's definitely YMMV.

Call your store to see if they have it in stock! Mine didn't have any out in the store, it was in the back. If you don't see it, ask for it by SKU and they will get it for you. The rebate printed out with my receipt and there is no limit! I got 8 reams and "made" $2!!

FREE Paper at Staples

Staples is doing away with the packaging on some of their paper. The paper (pictured above) is on sale for $6.99 each. Then there is a $5.99 mail in rebate per ream. The paper MUST be SKU 554638. Rebate details can be found here. There is no limit on the rebate. This is very YMMV since it's being phased out, but many have reported being able to find it!

You can also use a Staples or Office Depot coupon (Staples accepts competitors coupons). Here is a $10/$50 OD coupon, but it expires tomorrow (4/6/09). You can buy them on ebay or search Google for one.

Deal Scenario
Buy 8 reams x $6.99 = $55.92
- $10/$50 coupon
= $45.92 + tax OOP
- $47.92 back in rebates

Pep Boys Auto $10 off $30 coupon
